Project Innovation
September 10th, 2007
So i have had an idea for a while for doing learning sessions at my job as a means of stimulating creative problem solving skills in people. I got to put my ideas to the test this week. My class? Project Innovation. From my meeting invite…
Project Innovation seeks to challenge imc’ers to work together to come up with clever solutions for a unique problem. The gist is like this…
The meeting kicks off with lunch, followed by an intro or briefing into the day’s topic. After that, the room is broken up into small teams.
All teams will be given a uniform set of materials and a set amount of time to collaborate in creating a solution to a specified creative challenge, to be unveiled during each session.
Once time has expired, each team will present their solution for evaluation and discussion. Think The Apprentice meets Bill Nye the Science Guy meets Project Runway.
This weeks Challenge: The Structure.
Each team was asked to build a weight bearing structure. The final piece could be no smaller than 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot and had to sit on the ground and have a level top surface to hold the weight.
The supplied materials:
- 1 - 3 foot carboard tube
- 3 - Tubes of crazy glue
- 50 - 1/16th by 1/16th by 2 foot sections of balsa wood
- 40 - Rubber bands
- 1 - 12 inch ruler
- 1 - pair of scissors
Each team then had 45 minutes to complete the task.
Watch the video for the winner! (please note that due to an encoding glitch, I lost the audio from the meeting. I dubbed the Fatboy Slim song, “Build it up, Tear it down” over top, enjoy)
Meet Woody.

This Flash tool is a personalized joint pain profiller that my team and I built while I was the creative lead for CELEBREX (Pfizer). Woody, so called because of his texture, is one of the cooler things I’ve built during my time with ‘the agency.’ Please click the link to check it out.
